When the funnel and the session disagree
A funnel step can look healthy while every observed person hesitates there. Here is how we treat that disagreement.
The familiar contradiction
A product lead opens a funnel chart and sees a gentle slope. In the same week, three moderated sessions show people pausing for nearly a minute on that “healthy” step, reading the same sentence twice, then continuing. Application analytics and live observation are both true; they answer different questions.
What we do first
We ask what the event actually fires on. Many teams discover the step is counted when a page loads, not when a required field is completed. User behaviour tracking that celebrates page views as progress will always disagree with a human watching a stuck cursor.
A practical rule
Treat disagreement as a research finding, not a politics problem. Write both numbers and the observation note in the same paragraph. Stakeholders argue less when the evidence sits together.
If your team keeps meeting this contradiction, a short Analytics Interpretation Workshop often clears more fog than another dashboard rebuild.
